On 25th April 2015, Nepal was rocked by a 7.6 Magnitude earthquake followed by a strong aftershock of 7.3 Magnitude in 12th May 2015. This caused widespread fear and countless casualties including 9000+ deaths and countless severe and casual injures. Thousands of families lost their homes and property, most importantly – their family members. In the aftermath of the earthquake, Yuwalaya was engaged in the humanitarian response work, mainly to aware local communities about various effects of earthquake, possible spread of epidemics and ways to prevent them as well as to collect voices/stories of children and adolescents.
The “Humanitarian Assistance Project” was implemented with support of UNICEF Nepal in coordination with the Changa Monthly Magazine.
Target Areas:
10 VDCs each of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhading, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchwok, Nuwakot, Sindhuli, Ramechhap, Dolakha and Gorkha district
Key Achievements
- Reached 53,966 people including children, adolescent and adults
- Mobilized 24 District Focal Persons and 450 youth volunteers
- Conducted Door to door campaign on clean drinking water and foods, sanitation, hand washing, health and diseases, nutrition, protection, stress management and continuity of education.
- District Level Consultation with children in Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Kavre, Sindhuli, Ramechhap, Kathmandu, Gorkha and Nuwakot, reaching to 371 adolescents (183 boys and 188 girls).
- District level and VDC level report sharing of children consultation conducted at Okhaldhunga, Ramechhap, Rasuwa, Dhading, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur, followed by 2-VDC level report sharing organized at Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Kavre, Nuwakot and Makwanpur.
- 666 voices of children and adolescents in the form of audio, video and recordings captured. 56 child club members were mobilized.
- 136 community volunteers mobilized for Cholera awareness in Kathmandu in coordination with DPHO and Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
